She makes her own range of natural cosmetics, runs a boutique travel agency and makes banging wine. Alongside Paul Jordaan, assistant winemaker at Sadie Family Wines (you may have heard of them…), Pauline Roux crafts one of the most exciting Chenins coming out of South Africa.

The two cuties in charge of bringing the world Bodegas Frontonio are the perfect mish-mash of dreamers, drinkers and doers. They really are an exciting and very welcomed addition to the organic wine movement in and around their precious Valdejalón vineyard. Their values align with ours in that they understand that rules are meant to be broken, but before you break anything, make sure that your foundation is strong and that you respect the folk who came before you.

Just unpacking the name of the brand gives you a sense of how proprietors Martin & Welma Smith view the world. Atlas, the titan of perseverance, tasked with holding up the sky represents how very seriously they take their commitment to protecting the lands on which they grow their grapes. It also speaks to the maps on which the terroirs they work with are laid out. Swifts, one of the fastest and most aerial of the bird species, represents their nimble exploration to find said terroirs. The project, which on the surface, focuses on site-specific Chardonnays from distinctive places scattered across the Western Cape of South Africa, carries with it so much more than just beautiful wines of exceptional texture (Martin is the KING of texture! – Cami). It carries with it the dreams of some of the most authentic souls we have the pleasure to know.

“A dope-smoking political anarchist meets an upstanding young goody-goody sportsman at a mutual friend's 21st” – 35 years and 3 kids later, they are the family behind Luddite Wines. After a few years abroad, Niels and Penny returned to South Africa and found their plot of land in Bot River. Niels had a definite plan as to how he wanted to make wine and Penny knew that she wanted to farm as “green” as possible. Everything had to be about the wine. No intervention, no shortcuts and staying true to only bottling what, hand on heart was the best.

Alice Verburg, the middle child to Niels and Penny (who we know from the Saboteur White & Red) works with dad in the cellar at Luddite, adding a bit of fun & femininity to their wines. The culinary school grad, who has a couple of international harvests under her belt already, makes ONE barrel of her own wine every year that typically sells out at the speed of light – before she can even set any aside for herself!

Jolette Steyn is a super international wine sales lady by day, planning Vineyard Parties on the side. She has 15 harvests under her belt and quit her winemaking day job to take a gamble on making the kinds of wine she, as a self-proclaimed wine geek, truly loves. The Vineyard Party aims to bring some of South Africa’s lesser-known varietals to the forefront by exploring the Cape’s vineyards in search of biodiverse, sustainably farmed vineyards with happy soils, people and vines. 

Minimus started as the experimental arm of the Craft Wine Company, where the winemaker can bottle their experiments each year. Some bottles are good enough to be produced every year, others are one-offs - and numbered according to which experiment number it is.

Hubby to the ‘H’ in pH, is but one of many monikers for Thinus Krüger – cowboy, maverick, rock star are just a few of the others. Big hair, big moustache, big ideas and big adventures are the hallmarks of his pioneering project, named after a Norwegian ship that attempted to sail to both the North & South Poles. He’s headed to the edges of the winemaking map to find what vineyards lie over the next horizon, resulting in audacious and unusual wines that make the world feel like the good place it should be.

“Some days I am more wolf than woman, and I am still learning how to stop apologising for my wild”, read the line from a poem that Jolandie Fouché’s husband texted to her one day – the quote that inspired the name. Jolandie grew up around these Swartland vineyards, spending her school holidays working them to earn pocket money. After spreading her wings and making wine in other regions, she’s returned to make wines that are a true expression of herself – both the woman and the wild, and we think that’s pretty poetic.

The very first winery in the Southern Hemisphere to farm using biodynamic practices, James and Annie Millton have stayed true to their practice since establishing The Millton Vineyard in 1984. Truly experimental, Libiamo represents the next generation of the Millton family, taking the reins and looking toward something that is completely un-manipulated and doesn’t leave a debt or burden on the planet.

Baby-brother brand to Sokol Blosser, this started as a project to continue releasing wines when a nasty pest called phylloxera wiped out most of their vineyards. Through luck and intention, it has evolved (see what we did there?) into a brand in its own right under siblings & co-presidents Alison & Alex Sokol Blosser

Dynamo-duo, Pauline and Hanneke (pH – see?) are friends first and foremost, but they also make some pretty sensational wines – Paulette for Paulus Wine Co. and Hanneke for AA Badenhorst. On the side, they team up to make magic under their Vino pH label. They’re championing underdog grapes and making them into some of the coolest wines to come out of South Africa at the moment.

They say, quite simply, that they are raising handcrafted wines along with their two daughters. But we think John & Tasha Seccombe are doing so much more than that! They’re raising the profile of forgotten grapes, reflecting on the heritage of a complicated wine-producing country and thoughtfully capturing a new narrative of what that could become.

Having worked for some great Oregon wineries throughout his career, in so many cases, founder Ryan Harms’ friends wanted to support him, but simply couldn’t afford to. He decided that he wasn’t going to accept that wine made in Oregon had to be so darn expensive. So he created Union Wine Co., (which makes Underwood) so he could finally make accessible wines he could share with friends and family, without sacrificing quality.
